Since 2009, the GraduateCenterLMU awards prizes for the best photos submitted by PhD students from the LMU. Jonas Stuck's photo "Where has it gone?" shows an empty warehouse building in Brandenburg which used to contain unsorted illegal waste. There are more than 100 illegal waste dumps in Brandenburg, mainly packed with waste from the German capital, Berlin. Unsorted plastic waste lies directly next to asbestos plates or rusty cans of hairspray. Stuck's research about the export of hazardous waste from West to East Germany during the Cold War brought him from the convenient desks in the archives to the uncomfortable realities of the waste business. This storage warehouse has luckily already been cleaned up, but many other sites remain contaminated.
